Thank you for your interest in the preschool. Los Puentecitos is a new venture which has grown out of a dream planted in the hearts of the congregations of St. Luke's for a long time, out of a desire to nurture and care for children, and a desire to build "bridges" of understanding across cultures, languages, and all that divides us. Below is some basic information about the philosophy and approach of the preschool. If you have questions, please ask any of our staff or volunteers!
Our mission is to provide a welcoming and inclusive environment dedicated to individual growth. Our goal is to prepare children for a lifelong journey of learning by instilling Christian values, developing positive social skills and encouraging academic success.
Los Puentecitos/Little Bridges offers a bilingual play-based preschool program. Children learn by using their 5 senses; seeing, hearing, smelling, touching and tasting. With this in mind, teachers know that “play” is the primary context for learning for young children and that this play is their “work”. During play, children maximize their attention spans as they focus on self-selected activities that they regulate themselves. At the preschool level, play and learning are seamless. When children are engaged to learn, teachers can help them learn almost anything.
The preschool values play, children’s interests, engagement, creativity, and self-expression and support these characteristics with a balance of child-initiated and teacher-guided activities. We value pretend play, imaginary play and dramatic play. We believe that play not only provides the context for thinking, building knowledge, being attentive, solving problems and increasing social skills but also helps children deal with emotional experiences and accept guidance from teachers.
It is important to us to provide an environment where children’s natural desire to learn is stimulated with age-appropriate, meaningful experiences. The curriculum will cover broad units of learning such as self, seasons, farm, ocean, cultures and community. There will be extensive language development (in both English and Spanish) through nursery rhymes, songs, finger plays, books and discussion. Teachers are purposeful in selecting materials that will help the child grow academically and emotionally.
The Preschool program is conducted in both English and Spanish. One teacher will speak English to the children and the other Spanish. Instruction, songs, books, etc will be conducted in both languages. The main goal is language development in both languages to prepare your child for a dual language program (such as the Hollister Dual Language Academy at Gabilan Hills School) if you choose to follow that direction.
Children attend classes based on program of the parents’ choice in consultation with the teacher: either Tues and Thurs (2 day program), Monday, Wednesday and Friday (3 day program) or Monday through Friday (5 day program) for 3.5 hours/day. There is an annual registration fee and the monthly tuition for each program is as follows:
|Program||Days||Hours||Monthly Tuition Sept-May||Registration Fee|
|2 days||Tues/Thurs||8:30 – 12 noon||$160/month||$135|
|3 days||Mon/Wed/Fri||8:30 – 12 noon||$240/month||$135|
|5 days||Mon – Fri||8:30 – 12 noon||$400/month||$135|
There are a limited number of scholarships available for lower income families. Please see the guidelines for scholarship eligibility. Scholarship amount will be determined at the time of enrollment through an interview with the Director and Administrator based on the income verification paperwork you provide. If you are eligible for and planning on applying for a scholarship, you do not need to provide the registration fee at the time of registration; this will be calculated based on the amount of scholarship your child receives and will be due before school starts in September.
